AM 2012 Tirana bigWith more than 130 parliamentarians in attendance, OSCE PA President Riccardo Migliori (Italy) opened the 2012 Fall Meetings by speaking of the importance of inter-ethnic dialogue, the value of Albania's work to strengthen relations between communities of diverse religious backgrounds, and the importance of the OSCE taking a more pro-active approach to global challenges. In their opening addresses, host officials focused on issues central to freedom, recalling the good work the OSCE has done promoting progress in South East Europe and urging global co-operation to promote freedom in places like Syria.

Speaker of the Albanian Parliament Jozefina Topalli encouraged investment in Albania and in the face of global challenges, encouraged Members to recall how Albania overcame its struggles not long ago. "It seemed impossible for my generation," she said of the country where free speech and religion were prohibited in a land of isolation, hyper-collectivism and poverty. Albania is proof that freedom works, she said, "because in freedom what seems impossible comes true, becomes possible and tangible."

AM 2011 Dubrovnik bigMore than 200 parliamentarians from across the 56-country OSCE region met in Dubrovnik on 7-10 October to discuss progress in South East Europe, co-operation in the Mediterranean region, and heard a special presentation from Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group on OSCE conflict resolution. The OSCE PA's Tenth Fall Meetings also included a meeting of the Standing Committee of Heads of Delegations on 9 October.

"This region is now showing freedom, security and prosperity are not values that stop at any borders," said President Petros Efthymiou on the opening day. "They are the common ideals that live inside us all and shared commitments that we as parliamentarians, diplomats and government leaders must always work to renew."

AM 2010 Palermo bigOver 200 parliamentarians from 50 countries participated in the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly's Ninth Fall Meetings in Palermo, Sicily, from 8-11 October 2010. Hosted by the Italian Parliament, the Fall Meetings included a Conference on "The Fight against Transnational Organized Crime and Corruption," as well as meetings of the Mediterranean Forum and Standing Committee.

Featured speakers included OSCE PA President Petros Efthymiou (Greece), OSCE PA Vice-President and head of the Italian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly, Riccardo Migliori, OSCE Secretary General Marc Perrin de Brichambaut, and Kanat Saudabayev, Kazakhstan's Minister of Foreign Affairs and OSCE Chairperson-in-Office.

AM 2009 Athens bigUnder the theme of Energy Security and Environment, almost 200 members from 50 countries of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly met in Athens for the Fall Meetings 9 to 12 October.

"Long-term sustainability, energy security, and environmental solutions must be viewed hand-in-hand," said President Joao Soares in his conclusions of the Meetings. "Our responses cannot be successful if only enacted on a national level; they must be broad in their scope and approach."

AM 2008 Toronto bigThe OSCE PA's 2008 Fall Meetings took place from 18 to 21 September in Toronto, hosted by the Parliament of Canada. The meetings included a major inter-parliamentary conference focused on "The OSCE in an Open World: Trade, Migration, and Security." Bringing together Members of Parliaments from across the OSCE's 56 countries, the conference contributed to parliamentary dialogue on these important topics.

The Toronto meetings also included a session of the Assembly's Standing Committee of Heads of Delegations, a special debate on the situation in the South Caucasus and a Forum on the Mediterranean.

AM 2007 Portoroz bigFrom 29 September to 1 October, parliamentarians from across the OSCE met in Portoroz, Slovenia, for the Assembly's annual Fall Meetings. The meetings consisted of a conference, a meeting of the Standing Committee, and a Forum on the Mediterranean. The parliamentary conference, organized within the Parliamentary Troika of the Stability Pact for Southeastern Europe, focused on 'Security Through Co-operation in South East Europe: The Role of Parliamentarians'.

OSCE PA President Goran Lennmarker opened the Conference, stressing the importance of inter-parliamentary dialogue and the role of MPs in ensuring long-lasting security in the region. The opening session was also addressed by France Cukjati, the Speaker of the Slovenian National Assembly; Josep Borrell, Special Envoy of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office; Matjaz Sinkovec, State Secretary from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Roberto Battelli, Head of the Slovenian Delegation to the OSCE PA and Special Representative on South East Europe. The Conference also included sessions on: Decentralization and Local Government in South East Europe; Education as a Basis for Security: Knowing Your Neighbour; and Regional Co-operation in Energy Security.
